That thing you have in your hand and stare at for half the day would be a great place to start! Yes the humble mobile phone nowadays have very good camera capabilities, especially the higher end models. You can learn the basics of photography using one of these devices, (more on the basics later).
The first thing I would recommend is to simply play around with the phone & see how the image changes whilst in camera mode. You will see the screen adjust automatically when moving the phone around the environment, darkening and lighting depending on the scene. So what is going on here?
The metering system in your camera is a sophisticated light reading device that constantly evaluates light coming into the lense. This is turn will determine what it thinks is correct exposure, though this is not always the case and can be fooled depending on the scene.
Usually there are 3 types of metering on cameras. Here is a brief description of the 3 modes available -
Matrix metering:
In this mode exposure is determined by evaluating the entire scene which is devided into zones, then the average value is set depending on the amount of light from each zone. This is often used in an evenly lit scene. All of this sounds complicated, but you will soon come to understand this once you get started.
